St James the Great Academy, East MallingFixing a water-logged pitch

The playing field at this academy remained water-logged throughout the winter.

The pitch was very uneven and with a clay loam topsoil water collected in ponds. The academy could not afford annual sand dressings and so slit drains could not be considered.

The area was re-shaped to form a camber between goals and swales were installed outside the touchline on both sides.

With restriction on drainage water leaving site attenuation cells were installed in both swale drains. The playing area has coped well with recent rains and provides a firm playing surface.
