Feasibility Studies
The objective would be to investigate the potential for improvement or development, propose a concept plan and estimate the costs involved – including on-going maintenance. The study would be compiled in accordance with the normal requirements set down by the Football Foundation and Sport England for sports pitch improvements and incorporates the following:
1. The intended utilisation
The study would be undertaken in the light of the expected usage of the pitches by the sports club.
2. The proposed layout
The layout is to include the facilities desired by the sports club that can be safely accommodated on the site.
3. Topographical study
The site would be surveyed to establish the exact area and the existing gradient with contour intervals not exceeding 250mm. The objective would be to gauge the extent of regrading if necessary and the estimated earthworks quantities involved.
4. Soil survey
A soil survey would be completed to study the profile of existing ground - particularly the uniformity in topsoil depth and quality and to assess the physical limitations in excavation and drainage. Test pits would be excavated within the property in order to ascertain any variability in the soil profile that would influence drainage and earthworks. Any known previous history of the site should be made available for the study.
5. Drainage
In the assessment of drainage, the influence of surrounding areas would be studied in addition to the limitations of the playing areas. The drainage strategy would be subject to consent from the Environment Agency if applicable.
6. Concept construction plan
A concept sketch plan of a preferred layout and proposed summary of works would be prepared. Limitations would be highlighted and if possible, options would be offered.
7. Estimated costs
The magnitude of the works and associated costs of construction or renovation would be estimated and presented for discussion. Estimates of professional costs would be also presented to prepare working documents, compile a list of specialist contractors, assess tenders, recommend a preferred contractor and oversee the contract through to establishment.
8. Maintenance programme
The establishment and maintenance programme would be compiled and the current expected costs would be estimated.
9. Presentation of the study
Presentation of the study could be made to the club, if required, outlining practical implications, methods, construction procedures, options and limitations.
