After sustained drought, cracked-open clay loam soil under sports turf now presents a challenge. Grass cover is lost and the surface can be significantly uneven. With autumn approaching within months, treatment and seeding by the end of August offers the best chance of success – the heat stress will be over and rainfall will be imminent. As the surface can be severely affected it is wise to avoid simply over-seeding into the compacted surface. This is the opportunity to fracture the sun-baked topsoil in the preparation of a sound seedbed. Severe ripping followed by cultivating with the power harrow to incorporate the dead grass cover would stabilize the surface. Thereafter rolling and seeding into the seedbed would ensure the establishment of a quick and vigorous grass cover within less than six weeks.
