When evapotranspiration rates can reach 3 to 4mm per day, applying little water often serves no value – it is simply lost before it is of any benefit. By ensuring moist conditions at 50mm – more if possible – makes it possible to skip watering for up to 5 days. Though water is lost quickly from the surface layers it is retained longer at depth where there is not the same rate of loss. This means applying repeat cycles until there is moisture to the depth of the roots and then laying off watering for possibly up to a week. Not only can this mean saving of water but healthier growth with lower turgidity in the leaves.
